The ecosystem-based approach to climate change adaptation in the Maldives

Marrakech, November 16, 2016 - The day at the Italian Pavilion ended with the event "The approach based on the study of ecosystems for adaptation to climate change in the Maldives". During the works, the approach based on the study of ecosystems for adaptation to climate change in the Maldives was presented, aimed at investigating the effects of global and local changes on tropical coastal ecosystems, with reference to the interactions between ecosystems, social systems’ issues and the sustainable management of natural resources.

The Director General Francesco La Camera recalled the results achieved with the bilateral cooperation program signed by the Ministry of the Environment with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy of the Republic of Maldives, emphasizing the already approved projects: the one on the desalination of waters, through the reverse osmosis process and the use of a photovoltaic cell to electrically power the plant, on the island of Magoodhoo, in the Faafu atoll, developed in collaboration with the University of Milan Bicocca; and that, defined with the support of ENEA, for meteorological data management, aimed at strengthening the meteorological monitoring, early warning and disaster prevention network, through the creation of 25 meteorological stations.
