What are the environmental challenges and development opportunities related to the rapid urban growth of large African megalopolises and beyond? This is the question that Italy and Rwanda tried to answer today in the context of Cop27, Innovative Approaches to Restoration and Conservation of Urban Wetlands, the case study of the project "Sustainable Urban Wetlands Development in Kigali City".
The meeting, moderated by the Director of Climate Action and Inclusive Development Global Practice at the Global Green Growth Institute, (GGGI), Ingvild Solvang, was opened by Dr. Alessandro Modiano, Minister Plenipotentiary, Director General for European and International Activities of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, and the Director General of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, (REMA), Dr. Faustin Munyazikwiye.
The case study of Kigali, the Rwandan capital, offered the opportunity to document the importance of urban wetlands, today strongly threatened by human activities and by the rapid and disorderly urbanization, their crucial role in guaranteeing a healthy environment, in the contrast to pollution and in the defense of biodiversity, but also the opportunities in terms of sustainable and resilient economic development.
