Malè, October 12, 2017 - The third meeting of the Joint Committee established under the Memorandum of Understanding between Italy and the Maldives on climate change, vulnerability, risk management, adaptation and mitigation was held today.
Present at the meeting were the Director General of the Directorate General for Sustainable Development, for environmental damage and for relations with the European Union and International Organizations, Francesco La Camera, and the Minister for the Environment and Energy of the Republic of Maldives, Thoriq Ibrahim.
The Committee examined the progress of the Tender for the supply and installation of specialized equipment, and related services, for the construction of 25 automatic weather stations in the Maldives.
Furthermore, a new project has been approved for the development of a wave forecasting system in the Maldives Archipelago which will be made available to the Maldives Meteorological Service, (MMS). The project will be funded by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and will have a total duration of 5 years.
The Committee also evaluated the possibility of increasing resources to promote projects and activities within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding.
